Slow Dance

Ladies, gentlemen, and anyone who has ever dramatically stared across a dance floor while a slow jam ruined their life for three and a half minutes… welcome to Slow Dance.

Dreamed up by Laura Kelly (DJ LK) and organized through her Many Moons Events, Slow Dance became Kingston’s reigning queen of Valentine’s Day traditions: part dance party, part photo-booth fantasy, part emotional time machine. Every year, it swept attendees back into the glorious melodrama of proms gone by, but now with grown-up taste, grown-up shoes, and, crucially, spiked punch. Finally, the prom we all deserved.

Because let’s be honest, prom was always better in theory. The dress was itchy, the gym smelled faintly of floor polish and heartbreak, and somebody’s date was definitely crying in the parking lot by 10 p.m. Slow Dance took that whole awkward teenage fever dream and gave it a glow-up. Same slow songs, same disco lights, same dangerous potential for eye contact across the room… but this time with rare disco, funk, dance-floor bangers, and enough swoony slow jams to make even the iciest heart start planning a fantasy wedding with a stranger in sequins.

The room itself leaned hard into Valentine’s camp: whimsical decor, prom-night nostalgia, a photo booth for documenting your bad decisions in real time, and guests dressed in everything from full prom royalty fantasy to “I found this at the thrift store and now I’m the prettiest girl at the apocalypse.” In other words: divine.

And honey, this crowd did not allow wallflowers. Designated dancers made the rounds in decorative sashes like beauty queens on a mission, sweeping up anyone trying to lurk near the edge of the dance floor. No standing in the corner clutching your cup and pretending to text. If you came to Slow Dance, you were getting spun under the lights whether you liked it or not.

The final Slow Dance was held on Valentine’s Day 2026, as Laura decided to step back from hosting the event. Last we heard, she was hopeful someone else might pick up the corsage and continue the tradition. And honestly? That feels very prom-queen-abdicating-her-crown, doesn’t it? Somewhere, beneath the mirror ball, the spirit of Slow Dance is still slow-twirling in satin gloves, waiting for it’s next grand entrance.

This collection features a single Slow Dance poster from it’s time at Modern Fuel, but don’t stop your promenade there. For a bonus Slow Dance poster, shimmy over to our Grad Club collection. For another Modern Fuel gem, twirl into our Sarah Harmer post. And if you’d like to keep dancing, the tags at the bottom of the page will lead you deeper into the glittering orbit of DJ Haircut, DJ LK, and their many other moonlit projects.
