Local artists: Slaves of Spanky

Slaves of Spanky performing live at the Broom Factory in Kingston, Ontario on December 19, 2025

Proof that staying home would’ve been the wrong choice.

Hey. Listen.
If you’re in town and ever get the chance to catch Slaves of Spanky live, don’t think.. just do. Cancel a thing. Put your coat on. Go.

We caught them playing the Broom Factory on Dec.19th, and wow. What a performance.

Local artists Slaves of Spanky are high-energy in the way that sneaks up on you. You think, “Oh yeah, this is fun,” and suddenly you’re three songs deep, fully sweating, and dancing like you forgot you have knees. Their sound is a killer mix of rap/hip-hop front and centre with a full-on funk band behind it, tight as hell and clearly having a blast.

The lyrics? Hilarious. Sharp. The stage banter alone is worth the price of admission... confident, funny, never trying too hard, just totally at ease doing their thing. The grooves are filthy (in a good way).

There is no “casual listening” at a Slaves of Spanky show. You will move. You will sweat. You will discover muscles you forgot were part of the human design. Consider it cardio. Consider it leg day. Consider it a public service. Add in the fact that proceeds from ticket sales went to The Food Sharing Project, and suddenly your bad dancing is for a good cause.

The Broom Factory was buzzing... packed, moving, smiling, feeding off the band and each other like a room full of people who all made the correct life choice that day.

Shout-out to the openers, this bill didn’t mess around. Local band Rocket Surgery kicked off with a genre-bending set that got feet moving early, bringing a playful, infectious energy that had the room rocking from the first note. Hip-hop legend Height Keech showed up sick in every sense of the word. Under the weather but still coming in hot, he powered through with hard beats, sharp bars, and the bravery of a man later admitting this was his personal worst-illness record.

By the end of the night, everyone looked happy, exhausted, and a little bit feral… which, frankly, is how live music should make you feel.

If you see Slaves of Spanky on a lineup, circle it, star it, tell your friends, wear good shoes, hydrate, and prepare to wake up the next morning sore and smiing.

We’ll be watching for the next one.
