The Mahones

Formed here in Kingston in 1990, The Mahones have spent more than three decades bringing their signature blend of Irish folk and punk rock chaos to stages across Canada and beyond. Known for turning any venue into something resembling a packed East Coast pub at closing time, their shows have long been a rite of passage for Ontario punk fans.

This collection comes from our poster archive and captures the band’s visits to Sir John Eh’s, The Ale House, The Toucan, Blu Martini, The Wellington, The Mansion, Alfie’s Pub and Lake Ontario Park. Across these shows, they shared the stage with bands such as The Inbreds, Hungry Tim, Smartest Monkeys, Weeping Tile, The Mugworts, Joe’s Funeral, Continental, The Delinquints, Uncle Remus, Bloom, Pat Temple, Soul Survivors, Who’s Your Daddy, Dymphna Radford, Jay Harris, Commotionaires, Lounge Act, Wally High and Sause Pan Hero’s, leaving behind a paper trail of loud nights, spilled pints, and unforgettable singalongs.

From scrappy photocopied flyers to more polished later designs, these posters reflect not just the evolution of the band, but of the local scene that welcomed them back again and again.

If you ever woke up the morning after a Mahones show with a sore throat and no voice, you were doing it right.

Want to strum, drum or blow like a Mahone? Stop by Joe’s M.I.L.L, an instrument lending library named after the late bassist Joe Chithalen… just don’t blame us if the neighbours call the cops.
